Ah, the other Simon Lewis who did the Epic! It was my first Sportive and quite an introduction. Well done on completing the whole course; I did the 'short' 78 mile version and also made it up that little hill, at about 3 mph. I'll be following your blog as I also plan to be in the Alps (?) next July. all the best, Simon N Lewis.
It was quite a day, wasn't it. Good luck with the training. Have you signed up with anyone yet for the trip to France (Mont Ventoux I hear on the grape vine)? What other Sportives are you of doing? I'm thinking of doing Surrey Rumble, Dartmoor Classic, Fred Whitton and Dave Lloyd Mega Challenge. If that isn't enough than I'm in trouble.
The Etape du Tour is where 8,500 amateur cyclists tackle an actual mountain stage of the Tour de France a week before the professionals. It is the world's biggest one day cycling event with closed roads, support vehicles, feeding stations, and worryingly, 9 ambulances, 4 medical tents and 11 doctors.
37 years old, married to the fabulously supportive Cath with two pretty cool daughters aged 5 and 13. I cycled and played rugby when I was at school and university but stopped when work started. I was very out of shape when I was 29 so decided to do something.
I started running and went from nothing to doing the London Marathon in 2002 and again in 2003 and 2006. Also, New York in 2003, Edinburgh and Abingdon in 2008.
I concentrated on cycling in my build up to the Etape 2009 which went really well. I'm loving cycling again but still trying to keep running.
I'm now back at school, trying to qualify as a primary school teacher. As if that wasn't hard enough, I'm attempting my first iron man in August 2010.
