Interesting. I've learnt a lot about my legs in the past 6 years. I currently have a tight ITBS and found out that as its not a muscle, you can't tell if you are stretching it correctly as there are no stretch receptors. I now have a better stretch: http://www.rice.edu/~jenky/sports/itband.html
